12th Annual Wag-A-Thon is Saturday, May 19th, 2012

The Wag-A-Thon is our biggest fundraiser of the year. It has always been our goal to raise $10,000 at this event, but we have yet to reach that amount. We’re starting early this year in the hope that this will be the year that we reach our goal. Why $10,000? For one thing, we spend more than 2 times that amount every year and the expenses continue to grow. There was a time that most sick or hurt dogs and cats at the Humane Society were euthanized due to lack of funds to help them. Through the support of caring people like you, Paw Pals has been able to help save more pets every year. We believe every homeless pet should be given another chance for a loving home. Don’t you?

Every cent Paw Pals raises is spent to benefit the homeless pets at the Humane Society of Clinton County. We pay for vet care for animals in need of it, spays and neuters, medications and preventatives, food for special diets, and many different items that keep the dogs and cats more comfortable and happy while they wait for their forever homes. We also spend quite a bit to help with transport expenses when rescues are willing to help us with some of the dogs and cats.

The 12th Annual Wag-A-Thon is Saturday, May 19th. There will be a walk through the park with your dog (or a shelter dog if you like) and some fun contests. The registration fee is $10.00 for each dog walked or entered in a contest. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. and the event starts at 10. The walk will commence at about 10:30. Everything should be wrapped up by 11:30 or no later than noon. Please plan on attending! We need your support!

Another way you can help is to share (below) our Wag-A-Thon story with as many people as possible. If we can get thousands of people to contribute $5 or $10, we will have no problem reaching our goal. We have quite a few people that physically collect pledges to bring to the Wag-A-Thon, but we’re adding this tool for those of you that would like to help us raise funds without leaving home. Please help us raise enough money so that every animal that needs our help in the next year can get it!

Violet needs your help!

Violet is a sweet girl that needs a lot of help. She was found as a stray. The poor thing is very skinny. She weighs 18 pounds, but should be somewhere closer to 30. Her bones are protruding out of every side of her body, especially her back shoulder blade area. Violet’s leg is broken in 2 places. She has to wear an air cast for 6 weeks, but if that doesn’t work, the leg may have to be amputated. She also has a hernia and isn’t spayed yet, but the vet wants to wait until she gains a little more weight before they do that surgery. She has quite the appetite, so hopefully that won’t have to wait for long.

Even with all Violet is going through, she’s still very loving. She loves people and enjoys being around other dogs. She also seems to get along with cats just fine. Violet needs our help to recover so she can find her forever home.

Paw Pals’ finances have been stretched to the limit lately, and we’re having trouble coming up with the funds to treat Violet and some of the other sad cases that have shown up at the shelter lately. Dwight is a cute little guy that got off to a rocky start. He suffered from a severe eye infection where his third eyelid grew together and stuck to his eyeball. Surgery was needed to scrape the eyelid from the eye so it wouldn’t interfere with his vision. He is currently receiving eye medicine three times daily and being checked by the vet every three to four days to make sure his eye is healing properly. Sometimes the third eyelid will start to adhere to the eyeball again even when surgery is done. There has been quite a bit of expense for Dwight so far, but we think he’s worth it. Don’t you? Please consider donating toward his care so we can get him healed up and ready for his forever home.

Bomber is a very sweet, neutered, Border Collie mix who was surrendered by his owner who could no longer care for him. Bomber’s back was very sensitive, and he didn’t like it to be touched. After seeing a veterinarian, a horrible, untreated abscess was discovered. The abscess took up more than half of his back. He has already gone through an hour and a half long surgery to try to suture his back together. However, the infection is down to the muscle tissue, so more surgery is possibly needed. Not enough healthy tissue remained to cover the entire wound. He will need to see the vet every other day to monitor his progress. Even through all of this, his tail just wags and wags. Bomber’s vet bills will be quite high as we help him recover. Please consider donating toward his care. Any amount, small or large, is greatly appreciated. Thank you for caring!

Hi! My name is Bandit. I’m a young guy who was found after being hit by a car! I was banged up pretty badly, but I’m going to be OK. I’m still pretty sore, but my personality wasn’t affected at all. I’m a very sweet boy. They found my owners, but they didn’t want me anymore so I had to recuperate at the shelter. After nearly a week, a nice lady took me home as a foster home so I can begin to heal from my injuries. I needed a quieter place to get the rest I deserve and something more comfy than a cement floor.

Molly is a sweet girl who was picked up as a stray. She has the sweetest personality anyone could ask for. It is obvious she isn’t used to kind hands from humans. She has warmed up quickly and loves to be held and give hugs. Unfortunately, Molly was found to be heartworm positive. This used to be considered a death sentence, but with your help, Molly can get the treatment she needs to live the long, happy, healthy life she so deserves. Won’t you please help Molly?

Beagle in a Box (Shiloh’s Story)

This is a true story about Shiloh, also known by some as Beagle in a Box. Shiloh is around 12 years old. No one knows for sure. He apparently was once a boy’s dog, but for some reason the boy wasn’t around anymore. Shiloh has spent several years on a front porch on an 8 foot lead. His only shelter was a cardboard box with a light bulb in it. His lead barely allowed him to make it off the porch to go to the bathroom.

A couple years ago, one of our volunteers stopped and asked the owner if she could walk Shiloh because she felt sorry for him. She walked him for a while until she was told to stop. The owner said that now Shiloh wanted attention and would bark whenever someone walked by the house. This situation bothered the volunteer for a long time but nothing could be done about it. As long as a pet is given food, water, and shelter, this is viewed as acceptable by the law. Sadly, many pets live under these conditions.

About a week ago, a vicious dog that was running loose came up on the porch and attacked Shiloh. Since he was on a lead, he couldn’t get away. He was torn up pretty badly. Animal control convinced the owner that Shiloh needed vet care and if they couldn’t afford to take care of it, it would be in Shiloh’s best interest to surrender him.

Shiloh is now being taken care of! He was taken to the vet and got quite a few stitches and drainage tubes. He is on antibiotics and has been given needed vaccinations and tests. Hard to believe, but he tested negative for heartworms. Paw Pals already has over $750.00 invested in Shiloh. He will have several follow up vet visits until he is healed.

Shiloh is now in a foster home and is being shown love and attention. For the first time in his life, he is able to roam around a large back yard without a chain or tie out. He now has the life he should have had all along and hopefully he can find a forever home to finish out his final years.

Spirit is home!

Spirit (now renamed Shiloh) has been adopted! We are so happy she was able to find her forever home after being in the shelter for other four months.
